Convertible VG Commodore Project
September 30th, 2009Our convertible VG commodore project is finally moving forward. Seen here undergoing the torsion & beaming testing by local Automotive Engineer Lindsay Stone, the body strengthening & mods carried out by Richard Caird Restorations in Aitkenvale passed all the required tests, so now we can get serious....
And we are. The new 3.7 lsd is in the rear, along with adjustable top control arms & panhard rod. Stock rear brakes rebuilt with slotted rotors & stainless hoses added. We have A&B Motorsport adjustable spring saddles for accurate ride height setting, along with their adjustable dampers. The front end is all rebushed, & we are also using A&B Motorsport coil overs. The front brakes are undecided yet, as we're trying to retain 15" rims for our "theme". The engine combo has finally been decided, after sitting on a Holden 383 crank & rods, & a T5 for over 12 months. They will now go in a customers car, & we have a brand new L98 6 litre & 6 speed coming. Before the engine goes in, we will be installing a large cam, but that's about it initially. Mounts front & rear are now obtainable at reasonable prices, so we can do a dummy setup & assess the rest of it. We're getting keen!
update
Check out the NQPFC gallery & you'll see the convertible sitting on it's suspension, in matt black with moon discs on the wheels, & L98 sitting in the engine bay like it came from the factory that way. The colour is only temporary for the moment, but it looks tough in the flesh, & will be sitting as low as legally possible. We ended up using VT front brake calipers & slotted DBA 298mm rotors with hubs. The 6 speed box is in temporarily due to the starter motor having to move to the l/h side to not foul the rack, but we can sort tailshaft, shift etc in the mean time.
another update
We have the Mal Wood clutch, flywheel & starter conversion in, along with the gearshift revision, so the 'box is in to stay. Chris at Hardy Spicer sorted the tailshaft, & we cut & modified the extractors' outlets to get them as close as possible to the floor pan. Ben spent many hours dummying up the twin 3 inch exhaust to run beside the gearbox, over the top of the cross member & along the tailshaft. We even used oval formed pipe instead of round at the centre bearing for increased ground clearance. The exhaust is sitting approx. 6 inches off the ground, so we can still drop the ride height more if necessary. The engine bay is next, & we're looking at 2 roll hoops behind the seats as well.
